The packaging of our Christmas collection is far from traditional. This year we took inspiration from the stylistic designs of the 1970s (when Crabtree & Evelyn first opened) and mixed it with contemporary black and white accents. Bright, bold and unexpected it shows how it’s possible to give the Holiday season a shake-up while not losing any of the style, sentiment and fun.
When it comes to your own gift wrapping, push aside the usual tubes of red and green glittered paper and instead give your presents an updated twist. Here are a few ideas to make your presents more exciting this year.
Excitingly functional There’s just something about brown paper packages that piques our intrigue. Maybe it’s got something to do with the Sound of Music (you know the line) or perhaps it’s just the thrill of receiving a package in the post. The irony of wrapping your parcels in no-nonsense brown paper is that you understate the offering inside which somehow makes it even more exciting for the person ripping it open.
Fantastic foliage Finishing your gift wrap with holly, a pine cone or some sprigs of greenery shaped into a miniature wreath can look as cute as it does festive. It’s also relatively inexpensive, especially if you use brown paper as your base and then forage for the rest in the great outdoors. If you don’t happen to live near an alpine forest, you can adapt this theme according to your climate. Press some wildflowers and arrange them into a 2D floral bouquet or look to fruit for some inspiration. Try this old classic – punctuate some orange slices with cloves, bake them in the oven and tie one to each present with a piece of ribbon like a fragrant gift tag.
Artroom nostalgia Sticking with our 1970’s vibes, we’re firm believers that marbling deserves a comeback. Who says oil and water don’t mix? Not only will you win the most ludicrous points for making your own wrapping paper, it also looks surprisingly sophisticated for very little effort. And each piece of gift wrap will be entirely unique.
Colour-blocking Choose a signature colour for the season. Choose a colour that you love, and not one you traditionally associate with the season either. It could be mint green, millennial pink, mustard yellow, electric blue or neon. Making everything from the wrapping paper to the tissue paper, ribbons and gift tags in the same shade for an overwhelming abundance of the same colour. Your gift wrapping will be different, distinctive and memorable – a texturised mass of your favourite shade to make a strong statement.
For the culture vultures Any friends who love reading? Or who have big travel plans for 2019? Know any talented musicians? Tailor their gift wrapping to their interests. For the avid readers you could upcycle the pages of damaged books by using them as lettered wrapping paper. The same goes for old sheet music for musicians, scripts for the movie fans and maps for the wanderers.
Simple and striking And last but not least, if you’re not into colour – tone it down completely. Stick to black and white and shades of grey for an edgy statement. Black and white is an elegant combination that never gets old and will stand out among all the other presents. Experiment with geometric shapes for a tessellated monochrome contrast to draw the eyeline under the tree.
